KIBABII UNIVERSITY

Journalism Student Shines as NTV Features his News Story

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences takes immense pride in the remarkable achievements of its students across various programs. On 20th March, 2025, Brian Keberenge, a first-year Journalism student, captivated both the University and the nation with his outstanding reporting skills. His news story, Sauti za Wanafunzi kuhusu HELB, was aired on NTV, one of Kenya’s leading television channels under the Nation Media Group.

Reflecting on his journey, Keberenge stated that he had developed a deep passion for journalism from his early primary school days. He mentioned that by God’s grace, he had the opportunity to join Kibabii University, where he encountered exceptional trainers, state-of-the-art facilities, and a program that engaged students in news reporting and broadcasting from the beginning. He also expressed his immense joy and surprise upon discovering that his news item had been selected for airing.

“Media houses receive thousands of news stories from journalists across the country and beyond, covering diverse topical issues. Securing a spot among the selected few is no small feat. This achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of my coursemates and the Journalism Media Laboratory staff, who continuously support each other in developing skills and nurturing talent,” he remarked.

Dr. Kennedy Njasi Simiyu, one of Keberenge’s lecturers, praised his dedication and strong work ethic, describing him as a focused, hardworking, and disciplined student who consistently went beyond what was taught in class. Dr. Simiyu also emphasized the ongoing collaboration between Kibabii University and NTV through the NTV Mashinani program, which offers students a platform to refine their news reporting skills. He expressed confidence that more high-quality journalism pieces from the University would gain national recognition. Additionally, he noted that despite Keberenge not yet having taken the News Writing and Reporting course in his second year, he was already exhibiting exceptional competence.

Isabel Zattu, the Senior Technologist at the Journalism and Mass Communication Media Lab, lauded Keberenge’s commitment.

“Brian is a regular presence in the media lab, constantly practicing his reporting skills. His dedication, even as a first-year student, is admirable. He is undoubtedly a world-class journalist in the making,” she remarked.

Keberenge credited Kibabii University for providing an enabling environment that fosters the growth of journalism and mass communication students. He encouraged his peers to support each other and never shy away from pursuing their dreams.

“Success in journalism requires persistence, teamwork, and the courage to dream big,” he concluded.
