ELJMC department was delighted to host Dr, Peter Day from the University of Brighton, UK. A Senior Lecturer at, the School of Media, visited us on the 19th of April 2023. Dr Day is the Director of Community Media for Kenya (CM4K). CM4K is a community-based transformative learning partnership that seeks to empower marginalized communities and groups in Kenya through the development of active community media partnerships, knowledge sharing and capacity building through training.
Dr Day in his courtesy call to the university had brief meetings with Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academics and Students Affairs, Prof. Julius Kiprop Maiyo Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Partnership, Research and Innovation Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benedict M. Mutua and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration Finance and Development. Prof. Donald Siamba the key theme in the discussion was the need to initiate an active community-based media partnership between the community and the university, this will facilitate a transformative learning approach and enhance capacity building.
Thereafter, in a meeting held at the department of ELJMC that an effective collaboration between the institution is due and through this collaboration, it will enhance curriculum development; teaching; joint grant proposals; joint research; joint implementation of projects among others. A group of Journalism students benefited from a talk on the importance of working with communities during their university programs.
As academicians, we train students to use the skills and tools they have learned in their studies and practice to work in the community by sharing these skills and expertise to collaborate.
